Hypnos Story

Hypnos is a proud British, family-run bed and mattress maker with a heritage spanning over 120 years. Now in its fifth generation of family leadership, the business is chaired by Peter Keen, with his son James (CEO) and daughter Sarah actively involved in day-to-day operations.

Since the Edwardian era, Hypnos has been perfecting the art of handcrafting luxury pocket spring mattresses. Guided by a philosophy rooted in sustainable design, meticulous craftsmanship, and a passion for delivering deep, restorative sleep, Hypnos is dedicated to helping people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

The company holds a Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III, a mark of British excellence and service. Hypnos is also the only bed manufacturer to win the National Bed Federation’s “Bed Manufacturer of the Year” award three times and has received two Queen’s Awards—for International Trade (2017) and Sustainable Development (2020).

Using traditional techniques passed down through generations, Hypnos creates timeless, handcrafted beds that represent the best of British craftsmanship. Internationally recognised, Hypnos supplies bespoke beds not only to homes and hotels, but also to royalty, VIPs, and celebrities worldwide.

Innovation, low-carbon practices, and the use of responsibly sourced, natural materials are central to everything Hypnos does. As the world’s first carbon-neutral bedmaker, the company continues to lead the way in sustainable manufacturing, having received the Planet Mark in 2021 and achieving major milestones on its 15-year sustainability journey.

The Royal Warrant

Hypnos has proudly held a Royal Warrant since 1929, first awarded by His Majesty King George V. A symbol of exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and service, the Royal Warrant recognises companies that uphold the highest standards of British excellence and sustainability.

Today, Hypnos holds a Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III, acknowledging their role as trusted manufacturers of beds, mattresses, and upholstery.

Social Responsibility

Hypnos is committed to improving the wellbeing of both people and the planet—not only through the design of its products but also by nurturing strong relationships with local communities, suppliers, and customers.

Based in Buckinghamshire since 1904, Hypnos proudly supports the region’s rich furniture-making heritage while working to preserve its valuable natural habitats.

The Story of Our Wool

Traceable British Wool – Naturally Better Sleep

Wool is an exceptional material for sleep—it's soft, breathable, and naturally regulates body temperature while absorbing VOCs to promote a cleaner, healthier sleep environment. As a renewable, biodegradable fibre, wool is also a sustainable choice.

At Hypnos, sourcing wool ethically and responsibly is essential. That’s why we set out to find 100% British wool that’s fully traceable to the farms where it’s grown. In 2019, we became the first in the industry to form a partnership with The Woolkeepers®, ensuring that every fleece we use is traceable and that farmers are paid fairly and promptly, giving them the confidence to invest in a more sustainable future.

We were also pioneers in using wool from Red Tractor–assured farms, where standards cover the entire supply chain—from animal welfare to environmental care. Today, we’re proud to use wool certified by the globally recognised Responsible Wool Standard, meaning every step of the journey—from farming and shearing to washing and grading—is audited and carried out with care by experts.

Once these high-quality wool layers arrive at our Buckinghamshire workshop, they’re crafted into the heart of every Hypnos mattress—supporting better sleep and a better world.
